This is really scary...and it appears it saddens me just as much as it has you!

If we don't leave a rich written history for our future generations, then we're leaving them NOTHING. And I strongly believe that includes children's literature.

You can tell a lot about a society from what they want their children to know...and apparently we don't want our to know anything.

How sad.

"Those who enacted these laws and regulations have no idea of what they are destroying or -- worse -- are willing to allow about the destruction because it leaves room for them to rewrite history to suit their own prejudices and preferences."

Gina, I'm afraid I'm not as trusting as you are in this matter -- just the fact that I have NEVER seen a documented incident of 'lead poisoning by McGuffey Reader'; so without a danger to remove or accident to prevent, we are left with no alternative than to understand the petty greed of those who cannot cope with any 'not invented here' thought, creativity and history.

Let the burnings begin. (ah, I'm not referring to the books...)

This whole thing about Lead or not Lead in whatever you happen to be looking at, wearing, playing with, painting with, and anything else you might want to think about is all BUNK..... I am 64 years old and played with and read and held on to everything that ever came down the pike at me, toys, books, paints, color crayons, wax, mercury from borken thermometers, toys that had all sorts of elements in them, and I have never gotten a diseas from any of them, plus along with having my own childhood, I raised 5 (yes) five children so I had all thsoe things around me for many years, and I have NEVER SUFFERED ONE DAY of sickness form any of it..... BUNK and garbage and a chance for them to put into effect all sorts of censorship and rewriting history and revisionist crap that they want to make everything seem like it is all good and not offensive or unnatural for a child to have two mommies or two daddies...... BUNK and crap, all the way through. This world is losing a great country when America ceases being America, which will be happenign very shortly.

By the way, those in control of this destruction --- they know very well what they are doing and they are doing it with impuity, all the faster because they know that they are on a timeline and in a precarious ability based on getting the whole thing done before anyone can object too strongly.

It is a criminal thing they are doing, and they know it.

I totally agree with Claudia. It is not an 'innocent error'. They know damn well what they are doing and they are evil.

what a Waste. Are they trying to supress information?
As a book lover this sounds criminal.

Say goodbye to Dick & Jane. Goodbye Dick. Goodbye Jane. Goodbye Spot. Goodbye. I hope I live to see the day when the entire victim studies racket ceases to exist. The authors of these tomes all lack intellectual honesty. They all follow the same tired format. Seems like they all share the same hair shirt. The problem is, we're all paying for this tripe. Absent the California State University bookstore where I attended, including its own well-stocked tax-funded oppression studies library: any textbook by a Caucasian author. The text, Jihad vs. McWorld, by Clinton advisor Benjamin Barber, where tribalism and globalism collide, however was offered. The Green Movement adage: Think globally, act locally, best sums up the book, says Barber. Think globally, said Dick. Act locally, said Jane. Arf, said Spot. Aren't you tried of being victimized by the system, asked Dick? Yes, said Jane, I have been stereotyped and exploited beyond belief. I have been victimized. I have it, exclaimed Dick, we must move back to Chicago. We must write a new children’s book. What will we call it, asked Jane? Why we'll call it ... The Revenge Of Dick & Jane, of course laughed Dick. Arf, said Spot. Arf, arf, arf: http://theseedsof9-11.com

Had not heard of this before. Thank you for putting it out there, Ms. Cobb. This is truly appalling and terrifying. Being born in the mid-eighties and being raised around many books and hours of being read to, many of these make up a huge portion of my development and the catalyst for my love of reading. Generations of wonderful books that offered varied wisdom and lessons not being available is a complete suppression of free thought, and its terrible to realize that I may have been among the last generation who grew up with the treasure that is American childrens literature. Arrests for non-P.C. thoughts are not nearly as ominous as burning books and removing ideas from childrens lives. Thank you for bringing this into the open. Its simply evil, and Im going to warn everyone I know. Another contribution to my wife and I vowing to not bring children into this awful world.

Steven, I love books, but I was a little saddened by your comment about not bringing children into this world.

America is still a wonderful place, despite everything, and there are many other fine places to live around the world too.

If you don't choose to bring new life into the world, but want to be a parent, I hope you'll consider adopting a child. There are many children in the foster care system who need loving homes, including newborns.

Whether or not you become a parent, I hope you'll also find ways to pass on your love of books and reading to the next generation.
