I have previously blogged about Obama's strange contributors. About half of his $468 million in contributions look shady to me. They are coming from small donors of unknown origin. Some of Obama's small contributions have been traced back to the Middle East. Contributions from foreign donors are prohibited.
In some campaigns, "Donation Bundlers" have been discovered encouraging people to make small campaign donations. Sometimes the bundler gives the donors money, which is then passed on as contributions to a campaign. Sometimes such donations pass through a credit card. Bundling may or may not be going on in Obama's campaign.
We don't know how extensive the problem is at this point. However, I have previously said that ONLY those contributions that can be directly traced back to an American citizen SHOULD BE USED for a campaign. In my view, the burden o proof is on the candidate to verify the origin of his/her contributions.
The Republican National Committee wants the Federal Elections Commission to audit Obama's campaign fund, said RNC chief counsel Sean Cairncross. They will file a fund-raising complaint against Obama's campaign Monday, stating he has accepted donations that exceed federal limits, as well as illegal contributions from foreigners.
Cairncross said little is known about many of Obama's donors because the campaign is not required to disclose detailed information about people who give less than $200. McCain is laying his books open to third-party scrutiny, why has Obama refused?
RNC officials said their challenge is based largely on reports from Atlas Shrugs (yeah conservative bloggers!).
The Obama campaign has not yet responded.
