Former presidential and vice presidential candidate John Edwards can't take good care of his own marriage to one cancer-stricken wife, but we were supposed to trust him with the whole country.
Forgive me, but many unflattering adjectives come to mind:
- Dishonest
- Untrustworthy
- Two-faced
- Irresponsible
- Phony
I could go on, but that's probably enough.
I've taken a moment to dwell on today's admission by John Edwards because I am firmly convinced that a man who cannot be honest in his own marriage cannot be trusted to run a country either -- or any other major undertaking that that requires honesty, loyalty, and perseverance.
If you can't keep a solemn vow you make in front of all your family and friends to the one person you love enough to spend the rest of your life with -- well, yeah, that does reflect on your character.
I understand the temptations. But too many are too quick to rationalize too much.
I know that some are convinced that they can build a wall between their private and public lives. That illusion has brought down many a man, many a woman, many a household, and even a few nations.
