"I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful. I didn't 'fall out in church' as they say, but there was a very strong awakening in me of the importance of these issues in my life. I didn't want to walk alone on this journey. Accepting Jesus Christ in my life has been a powerful guide for my conduct and my values and my ideals.

There is one thing that I want to mention that I think is important. Part of what we've been seeing during the course this campaign is some scurrilous e-mails that have been sent out, denying my faith, talking about me being a Muslim, suggesting that I got sworn in the U.S. Senate with a Quran in my hand or that I don't pledge allegiance to the flag. I think it's really important for your readers to know that I have been a member of the same church for almost 20 years, and I have never practiced Islam. I am respectful of the religion, but it's not my own. One of the things that's very important in this day and age is that we don't use religion as a political tool and certainly that we don't lie about religion as a way to score political points. I just thought it was important to get that in there to dispel rumors that have been over the Internet. We've done so repeatedly, but obviously it's a political tactic of somebody to try to provide this misinformation."
Barack Obama

Obama is the biggest Fraud and a Liar. Obama has only been a christian in the last 20years but what was he in the previous 26years of his life?(his now age 46years) now Obama just be honest for once and admit that your first religion was islam or moslim.

This is annoying:

The Insider reports: "As the Jerusalem Post reports, "Barack Obama's half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya."

That link is dead, so I did a search in the JP using that phrase and nothing shows up either. Perhaps you could lend a hand.

If this is true, the implications are far reaching indeed. It destroys his fundamental claim of Christianity, energizes his comment about the "57" states, underscores his Iranian and Hamas endorsements... and flat out makes him a liar.

The only reason I question this is because all sources provided including the sources in the Insider come from the Insider making the claim one sided. I will continue to dig for a while.

"Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian."

This statement is actually doubly incorrect.

In addition to the obvious (Obama WAS born and raised a Muslim, though he isn't one now) Barack Hussein Obama is NOT a Christian. Absolutely not.

Anyone who believes in a God that is for their people but against all others is not worshipping the Christian God. They are worshipping their own false deity, not Jesus Christ. Jesus came to save all of us, not some of us. But according to James Cone (and by extension Rev. Jeremiah Wright):

“If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.”

Rev. Wright has confirmed that this is the type of "God" he believes in, and since Obama has claimed that Rev. Wright led him to Christ, I can only assume that this is the type of "God" he believes in as well.

To this “God” that Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Barack Hussein Obama worship, I say this:

I know Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Jesus Christ.

Obama has not lied about his background. While Muslims may believe Obama was "born" a Muslim because his father had been a Muslim before rejecting it in later life, Obama was born in the United States of America where no one is "born" a specific religion. In the United States of America people are allowed to choose whether to have a religion, a founding principle of our country.

Obama never went to Africa until his mid-20s. Wearing the clothing of a foreign country does not make someone a certain religion.

History of schooling distorted article on the Chicago Tribune site since March 25, 2007 provides details. Obama studied several religions. There is a major difference in studying a religion in school and believing / practicing a religion.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - - When Barack Obama was a boy here, he studied for three years at a religious school and prayed four times a day.

"It was a Roman Catholic school. There, Obama was registered as student No. 203. "Yes, he prayed, because all the students here had to pray in the Catholic way-- `in the name of the Father, [Son] and the Holy Spirit,'" recalled Obama's 1st-grade teacher, Israella Pareira Darmawan."

"When he was at a public school for a year, he learned about Islam."

Obama was back in Hawaii from the 5th grade until graduation. Obama's mother grew-up in the 60s and like many children of the 60s, she rejected "organized" religion. People that knew her have used the term "flower child."

Barack Obama's Religious Upbringing
His mother Stanley Ann Dunham's best friend in high school has said that she " touted herself as an atheist, and it was something she'd read about and could argue."

Maya Soetoro-Ng, (Obama's half-sister) when asked if her mother was an atheist, said, "I wouldn't have called her an atheist. She was an agnostic. She basically gave us all the good books - the Bible, the Hindu Upanishads and the Buddhist scripture, the Tao Te Ching - and wanted us to recognise that everyone has something beautiful to contribute."

"Jesus, she felt, was a wonderful example. But she felt that a lot of Christians behaved in un-Christian ways."

In his 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father Barack Obama wrote, "My mother's confidence in needlepoint virtues depended on a faith I didn't possess... In a land [Indonesia] where fatalism remained a necessary tool for enduring hardship... she was a lonely witness for secular humanism, a soldier for New Deal, Peace Corps, position-paper liberalism." In his 2006 book The Audacity of Hope Obama wrote, "I was not raised in a religious household... My mother's own experiences... only reinforced this inherited skepticism. And yet for all her professed secularism, my mother was in many ways the most spiritually awakened person that I've ever known." Religion for her was "just one of the many ways that man attempted to control the unknowable and understand the deeper truths about our lives," Obama wrote. In 2007, he said in a speech, "My mother, whose parents were nonpracticing Baptists and Methodists, was one of the most spiritual souls I ever knew. But she had a healthy skepticism of religion as an institution."

RE: Jim Says Obama Was Not Lying.

Thank you Jim, but I would prefer that Obama speak for himself in these matters. This controversy has arisen because Obama himself has failed to clarify the truth. You are mistaken about the position of Islam vis a vis citizenship. In Islam, the highest laws are the Koran, the Hadith, and other texts. The Koran is taken as the literal word of Allah, to which all Muslims must submit.

There is no law which is considered higher. If Obama is born of a Muslim father then he is Muslim. Period. No discussion necessary. Of course, he may renounce Islam, any Muslim can. But he must do this formally and openly. He must willingly and openly declare himself to be an apostate.

It is not possible for a Muslim to 'drift away' from his religion. He is always considered a Muslim unless he clearly and publicly renounces Islam.

Then, of course the Koran requires that he be killed as an apostate.

There is no middle ground, no weaselling out of it, no caveat in Muslim Jurisprudence about US citizenship that permits Obama to escape.

Pro Patria

Is this some sort of joke? The guy in this article didn't even meet Barack Obama until Obama was 24 years old? What the heck would he know about how Obama's white grandparents were raising him in Hawaii?

Rediculous! Let's pretend for a second that Obama was raised a Muslim and later converted ... so what! There is nothing wrong with being a Muslim. In every Religion there are extremists but those very few cannot and should not define the virtues of an entire religion. With that said, how can Obama defend himself any more than he has already done to all you pretentious haters?

Argue about his policies and your concerns about them but please stop bringing up petty nonsense really. You either agree with his principles or you don't. I would prefer for you to bring up an argument against his healthcare plan, or energy plan or your issue with his approach to fixing the economy. That to me will make sense. Anything short of that is just the typical dirty politics for those who do not like progress.

A black man WILL be President of the United States because he has shown that he can unite the country, inspire so many and motivate more people to take action as never before. So get over it already!

If it weren't such a serious issue, these types of comments would make me laugh. The people who are accusing him of lying about his background are using his "brother" is an authority on the way the Barak grew up. First of all, it's not his brother, it's his half-brother. Who never even knew him until Barak was in his 20's! secondly, he never said Barak was a Muslim, he says he has a Muslim background. I have a German/Irish background, yet I've never even set foot in either of these countries. But, as you said, if he were a Muslim... why would that matter? This America people! Our founders came here to seek religious freedom. But I guess the sad fact is that there are still many people in this country who are still so full of prejudice and fear, that they'll feel justified in repeating any lies to hurt their fellow American if they're a little different. Verbal Lynching.

OK you know what i dont care if Barack Obama was raised muslim, he changed his faith to christian and he doesnt turn his back on our flag because then the would not let him run for president..

Barack Obama is not a Muslim, and how do any of you have the right to say he is not a Christian? Are you claiming that you're more powerful than God and you can decide who is and who isn't a Christian? Last time I checked, ANYONE could practice Christianity as long as they accept Jesus Christ as their savior. You're all hypocrites! You give religion a bad name!
And why should it matter even if he was a Muslim? Real Islam (not the fundamental hypocritical Islam of terrorists) is a beautiful religion that respects peace, honors Jesus, and has a shared history with Judaism and Christianity. You guys should really educate yourselves and actually read the Qu'ran. I am not a Muslim but I respect the religion greatly as I have lived in a Muslim country in West Africa where Christians and Muslims live in harmony. They celebrate each other's religions and inter-marry, it's beautiful.
You're hateful fundamental spouting is sickening. You are not peaceful, respectful, and loving people. You do not stand for Jesus in any way.

To Judy: I'm sorry but your comments have NOTHING TO DO with the issue at hand.

THE ISSUE IS HONESTY, not religion.

Recently I wrote: “Even as late as 2006, Obama gave interviews where he clearly was not a Christian. The text I link to makes a compelling case for Obama's lack of commitment to Christianity. Like his mother, Obama acknowledges a "higher power" of some sort, but beyond that, he thinks most religions are about the same.

Which is ALL FINE WITH ME. For me, Obama does not have to be a Christian. I certainly wouldn't mind if he was a Jew, a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Zoroastrian, or an atheist. It's ALL FINE WITH ME.

But I really DON’T LIKE IT when a politician lies his head off and makes up a bunch of bunk about who he is and what he believes. Clearly, Obama started claiming he was a devout Christian sometime after 2006.”

OBAMA JUST NEEDS TO TELL US, STRAIGHT OUT, what the history of his religious beliefs are, and what he believes now. I'M FINE WITH ANYTHING, so long as it's THE TRUTH.

AS IT IS, I don't trust him because he is deliberately concealing information that every American has the right to know.

Pro Patria

I deeply distrust Mr. Obama, because "truth" is defined by him, not facts. What disturbs me is that his fans do not seem to care about the dearth of real information about this person. And that he then blows off the facts that don't fit his agenda. Ohhhh, scary!

he won whether or not hes a muslim or a christian that says something!!

I don't understand why do people hate muslims soooooo much??? what's wrong with everybody . who cares what religion Obama is - all he wants for the world is Peace ... what's so bad about wanting peace for the world...
Wheather He's Muslim or Christian it does not matter!!!.

[Gina Cobb responds: Muslim or Christian DOES matter. The two religions are not interchangeable like Pepsi or Coke, at least not as practiced in most of the world today. One religion is currently producing terror attacks all over the world every week. The other is not. Can you guess which religion kills innocent civilians practically every day of the week somewhere in the world? Visit thereligionofpeace.com for the latest death toll.
