Iran Hostage Crisis
Iranian hostage takers escort a blindfolded American in Tehran, Iran, November 1979.Iranians stormed the United States embassy in Tehran in November 1979 and took 66 Americans hostage, 52 of whom were held for 444 days. The situation representeda crisis for the United States and an embarrassment for President Jimmy Carter,who was not re-elected. The hostages were finally released on January 20, 1981, minutes after Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as President of the United States.
