Iran is to dig 320,000 graves in border districts to allow for the burial of enemy soldiers in the event of any attack on its territory, a top commander said on Sunday.
"In implementation of the Geneva Conventions, the necessary measures are being taken to provide for the burial of enemy soldiers," the Mehr news agency quoted General Mir-Faisal Bagherzadeh as saying.
I'm torn between various reactions:
1. This is just morbid sabre-ratting from Iran, intended to frighten the weak-kneed and gullible.
2. Gee, if it's that easy to comply with the Geneva Conventions -- just kill and bury every enemy combatant -- why do we need Guantanamo or civilian habeas corpus? Maybe we should dig graves for the Guantanamo detainees and get with the Geneva Convention, Iranian style!
3. Iran knows it's about to either attack Israel or have its nuclear facilities attacked. Therefore, Iran is digging graves for its own people in advance. The claim that the graves are for "enemy soldiers" is a cover story.
I tend to think that this is simply propaganda designed to frighten Israelis and deter an attack. It won't work, and Iran won't comply with the Geneva Convention in any event. It doesn't even comply with U.N. demands to allow inspection of its nuclear facilities.
