Hillary Clinton doesn't need an opponent to have a debate. All she needs is two weeks and a hot potato issue like driver's licenses for illegal aliens, and she'll be sure to cover both sides of the question for you.
She's just announced that she's against driver's licenses for illegals:
"I support Governor Spitzer's decision today to withdraw his proposal," Clinton said in a statement. "As president, I will not support driver's licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system."
Gee, nice of you to share that with us, Mrs. Clinton -- two weeks after the debate in which even your Democratic colleagues couldn't figure out which side you were on.
Why, just two weeks ago (Halloween, to be precise) you clarified the day after that debate that you were in favor of Spitzer's plan:
Senator Clinton supports governors like Governor Spitzer who believe they need such a measure to deal with the crisis caused by this administration’s failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform,’” her campaign said.
But Spitzer has retreated under heavy fire, and apparently Clinton has decided that a tactical retreat is in order as well.
That's at least a triple back flip for Mrs. Clinton on the issue of driver's licenses for illegals within the course of two weeks.
It would be amusing except for the fact that the very integrity of our democracy is at stake. Handing out driver's licenses to non-citizens is part and parcel of a system that openly invites massive election fraud. Nothing could be more serious. If America lacks election integrity, then this proud nation is democracy no more.
Our national security is at stake as well. Driver's licenses are a fundamental identification document. Hand them out too loosely and you are inviting another horrific, deadly attack on American soil.
If all of that weren't enough reason for grave concern, there is Mrs. Clinton herself. It is chilling to realize that she is currently the Democratic front runner, and yet she doesn't seem to have two firm principles to rub together. There is only one guiding star by which her position on any given issue can be predicted, and that is this: She wants to acquire and maintain the power of the presidency.
If and when she acquires that power, she'll suddenly have a frightening number of firm positions on the issues, which may or may not match anything you've heard during the campaign.
As Clinton's campaign itself has made clear by scripting questions for the candidate to answer, there's no point in asking any questions of Hillary Clinton. She will tell you what she thinks you want to hear, and she will feel free to revise her position again in one day and then again two weeks later. Good luck making sense of that.
