It's official: Elliot Spitzer's plan to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens is dead.
I would celebrate the announcement but for three things:
1. Our very democracy is at stake. When all it takes is a driver's license to vote, handing out driver's licenses to non-citizens (along with motor voter registration cards and absentee ballots) is an open invitation to voter fraud.
2. Our national security is at stake. A driver's license is our primary identification document. It grants the bearer access to much more than the roads. After September 11, 2001, we know that far more is at stake when it comes to photo identification than control of one vehicle.
3. They'll be back. This is not the last word. This is only today's public retreat by one governor in one state. For the left, it is always one step back today, two steps forward tomorrow.
In the last Congress, the House passed a bill to require photo identification for voting -- a reasonable proposal given the increased anonymity of our society. That bill was inexcusably opposed by Democrats and, inexcusably, the Republican majority in the Senate failed to pass the bill before leaving office.
Now a Democratic Congressman, Keith Ellsion, has introduced a bill to outlaw photo I.D. requirements for voters in federal elections. If Democrats in Congress think they can get away with it, they will pass the bill. It is an open invitation to voter fraud.
It is preposterous that photographic proof of identity is required to drive a car, cash a check, or buy a beer, but not to exercise the right to vote.
Celebrate today, but the fight for the integrity of our elections and the security of our nation is not over. It begins again tomorrow.
