Warren Kozak takes a look at "The Conspiratorial Mind" in the New York Sun.
It really comes down to this: Sometimes the truth is so completely unexpected and so completely unwelcome that a conspiracy theory -- any other theory, even one with precious little support -- is the only comfortable way out. The alternative of having one's entire worldview turned upside down is just too painful, so people lie to themselves. Here's how Kozak explains it:
Something profound happened to America on November 22, 1963, just as it happened on September 11, 2001, and on December 7, 1941, that was inexplicable. In the first case, a young, vibrant president [John F. Kennedy] was gunned down in broad daylight in an American city. In 1963, Americans naively believed this sort of thing just didn't happen in their country. Sure, three presidents had been assassinated before, but the last one was McKinley in 1901. Similarly, 38 years later, when we watched plane after plane crash into our landmarks on "Good Morning America" and then saw two of the largest and most remarkable buildings in the world come tumbling down with a horrifying loss of life, it defied any previous part of our national consciousness.
Those who are still trying to blame their own government or anyone other than Al Qaeda for the 9/11 attacks need to snap out of it and rise to meet the challenges we now face. There is a real enemy out there, and pretending that Islamic terrorists did not commit these horrors will not make that real enemy disappear.
It is silly to deny that the 9/11 attacks were committed by Islamic terrorists because the attacks are just one in a long series of horrifying atrocities committed by Islamic terrorists, ranging from homicide bomb attacks to beheadings to torture to car bombings to the Beslan school massacre and other horrors committed by terrorists around the world. The list goes on and on. The only thing remarkable about the 9/11 attacks is not how evil they were -- that is par for the course for Islamic terrorists -- but simply their large scale.
To those who still want to believe that anyone other than Al Qaeda committed the 9/11 attacks -- wake up and smell the coffee! Your illusions will not protect you anywhere on earth. What will protect you is for America and all other decent, civilized nations to fight the real enemy until we prevail.
Wake up and join the rest of us. We need you.
