There is a great deal to say about the latest terror plot to blow up multiple airplanes as they were crossing the Atlantic. If you jump over to Memeorandum you can find more blog posts to read than you have time for. Some, but by no means all -- of the best of the best -- are linked in my post of Thursdays' Best of the Best.
A vocal portion of the far left is once again engaging in the deadly, self-destructive game I've referred to before as "blaming the rescuers." Instead of extending thanks and congratulations to the governmental agencies who discovered this plot and disrupted it just days before it might have taken thousands of lives, the far left is "questioning the timing."
Right.
When a terror plot isn't disrupted, blame the government for having failed to stop the terrorists in time.
When a terror plot is disrupted, question the "timing." Claim that the disclosure of the terrorist plot is just a "diversion tactic."
Is there any good day when we can disrupt terror plots without having some fool "question the timing"? Let us all know and we'll all pencil it in. Then we'll just have to hope the terrorists cooperate.
Just to be clear, the timing here was what it had to be. According to U.S. intelligence officials quoted by the Associated Press, a "dry run" of this horrific terror attack was to occur within two days, with the actual attacks to follow within days. Over two thousand lives would have been lost, assuming more than 200 seats per plane.
I guess when you live in a fever of hatred for America's or Britain's leaders, there is no such thing as a genuine terror threat. Everything is made up, even the September 11th attack itself. Even when Islamic terrorists saw a man's head off while he screams, videotape it, and post it on the internet, the left can't think of anything to do but to blame George Bush.
So how shall we proceed?
Clearly there is a group, theoretically on America's side and the side of the civilized world, that has lost its collective mind, it's collective conscience, or perhaps both. We can only hope that this group is small in number. By conscious choice, this group is eager to engage in national suicide. They reserve their strongest venom for our own nation's leaders, officials, and armed forces, and little or none for Islamic terrorists.
I have become convinced that nothing will wake them up -- not even further horrific attacks on American soil. To their dying breath -- even at the hands of terrorists -- they will think it was all an elaborate CIA plot. There no actual terrorists in their world -- just pretend terrorists made up by the president to ensure his re-election. (Actually, since Bush can't be re-elected, the plots must all be made up for some amorphous political gain. That detail won't slow down the far left.)
We must carry on without the help of the far left. And in the days ahead, I will be writing about the qualities that it will take for America and the civilized world as a whole to to prevail in the war on terror. Here are some of the most important qualities it will take:
- Basic morality
- Moral clarity
- Honesty
- Courage
- Unity
- Flexible persistence
- Respect for personal and economic freedom
- Wisdom
- Optimism
- Belief in a higher power
This will be a long war. We need to periodically rethink how we are fighting it. We also need to think about how to deal with the perpetually naive and foolish among us.
I'm with you 100% on your analysis of the fools who would have us commit "politically correct" suicide.
You end by lamenting that this will be a long war -- it brought to mind a "Letter to the Editor" I read today from the Ayn Rand website (http://www.aynrand.org/) -- here is the last paragraph:
"We should insist that our government eliminate
the real source of the problem decisively and quickly. Islamic totalitarian groups such as Hezbollah and Al Qaeda, and the countries
supporting them such as Iran and Syria, are hell-bent on attacking Americans. They will not stop unless we make it impossible for them to function or regroup. Their infrastructure and support networks
have to be permanently disabled as quickly as possible in whatever way our military recommends. A drawn-out, five-year "War on Terror" where we help build roads, plants and hospitals in the Middle East
only strengthens the resolve of our enemies."
I agree with you that it probably will be a long war but does it really have to be?
Great blog!
