This from the Los Angeles Times (registration required) is the most pitiful bit of wartime propaganda in favor of America's enemies that I can remember reading.
Pro-terrorist bias is nothing new for the L.A. Times, but in this story, the paper has reached new pinnacles of pro-terrorist pandering:
Remaining in the ruins was a Hezbollah fighter, who lingered beside the town reservoir. Like most foot soldiers in the Shiite Muslim militia, the 43-year-old schoolteacher refused to give his name. The scratch of a walkie-talkie came from his pants pocket.
"The whole world is crying for Israel to stop, and they don't care," he said, turning to point over the hills toward the Israeli border. "Why do I fight? It's an emergency. You think I like it? I hate it. All the time fighting, fighting, fighting."
Clad in a plaid shirt and a baseball cap advertising a tire shop, the Hezbollah fighter said that his house had been destroyed for the second time — the first time, he said, was in 1983.
"The only thing that matters is after the war is over we gather money and buy rockets and buy missiles and buy guns," he said. "Because nobody in this earth loves us. I can't believe it. Just because we are Muslims."
His friend, a fellow Hezbollah fighter, had been "martyred" in the battles, he said. He began to cry as he spoke."I wish I were in his place and martyred instead of living this dog's life," he said.
Cry me a river.
Let me get this straight.
This Hezbollah "fighter" is waging war in civilian clothing (plaid shirt and baseball cap), thereby mingling with the civilian population and drawing fire to his own civilian community.
He hates all the "fighting, fighting, fighting" and can't wait for the war to be over so that -- what -- he can go fishing? He can encourage his children to live in peace with Israelis? -- No, not quite:
"The only thing that matters is after the war is over we gather money and buy rockets and buy missiles and buy guns," he said.
You read that right. He wants the war to be "over" so he can buy rockets and missiles and guns.
And he says the whole worlds hates Hezbollah "fighters" just because they are Muslim. Right.
The fact that Hezbollah -- the terrorist group of which this man is a member -- has stockpiled thousands of rockets, loaded them with shrapnel and ball bearings to maximize human death and injury, fired more than 1500 of those rockets at Israeli civilians, and kidnapped Israeli soldiers has absolutely nothing to do with Israel's reaction to Hezbollah's "fighters." They're all just completely unrelated facts.
And this unnamed Hezbollah "fighter's" big dream in life?
A peaceful Lebanon for the rest of eternity?
A rabbit farm?
A shrimp boat?
Nah -- to be martyred. "His friend, a fellow Hezbollah fighter, had been "martyred" in the battles, he said. He began to cry as he spoke.
"I wish I were in his place and martyred instead of living this dog's life," he said."
Well, if martyrdom is your biggest goal in life, sir, I'd say you're making progress.
I'd love to help him reach his goal... now, which resevoir was this near?
