This is wonderful news. Scientists are now learning how to turn stem cells from fat into muscle cells.
It sounds like a dieter's dream come true, but it's actually far more important than that.
It means that scientists will be able to repair injuries and cure diseases by building new muscle tissue from the patient's own cells, avoiding problems of rejection. Smooth muscle can be used for organ repair and for treating heart disease, gastrointestinal diseases and bladder dysfunction.
Importantly, this technology does not involve the use of embryonic stem cells. No human embroyos will be destroyed in the process of curing disease.
It's good news and it holds great promise for the future.
