William F. Buckley predicts a backlash against those who have used Dick Cheney's hunting accident as an excuse to attack the Vice President's character:
"This commentator rations himself to only one prediction every 15 years. Mine now is that there is going to be a devastating backlash in the months and years ahead in the matter of Cheney and the quail shoot."
I hope Buckley is right, but I don't know whether a backlash will materialize. My crystal ball is cloudy on this one.
It is easy to see, though, what history should remember. Cheney had a hunting accident. So have lots of other people; accidents are hardly unique to hunting. Someone got hurt in this accident. Cheney was shocked and remorseful and will undoubtedly be more careful in the future.
That is, or should be, the end of the story.
But some will continue to beat this dead quail until it falls to pieces.
