Backspin has noticed a disturbing trend: "It looks like AP has adopted the word "martyr" to describe suicide bombers."
That's right -- when they deliberately attack and kill innocent men, women, and children, they're not "terrorists." They're "martyrs." This from the organization that provides most of the news you read everyday -- the Associated Press.

"Um Nidal, mother of three Palestinian martyrs delivering a speech at a celebration at the 18th foundation anniversary of Palestinian militant group, Hamas, on Friday Dec. 30, 2005, in the Syrian capital, Damascus. And when a mother orders three of her children to kill themselves and to kill innocent civilians with them, what better candidate could you have to help run the new Palestinian government?
Arab mother Um Nidal, pictured above, sent three of her sons to die and murder others in the process. Now she is the first female candidate on the Hamas list in the upcoming Palestinian Authority parliamentary elections.
Um Nidal, also known as Mariam Farahat, became famous when she was filmed bidding her 17-year-old son Mohammed farewell to die through a terrorist attack. She ordered him "not to return except as a shahid [martyr for Allah]."
Backspin suggests that you send comments to the Associated Press at feedback@ap.org.
There's more about Um Nidal at Little Green Footballs. Especially interesting is this June 25, 2002 post, "Death Cult Celebrity," discussing Palestinian and world reaction to Um Nidal, also known as Mariam Farahat. As Little Green Footballs pointed out in 2005, "The fanatical obsession with Israel (and concomitant hatred of the West) has reached pandemic proportions in the Arab Muslim world."
And now, apparently in parts of the Associated Press as well.
