The president delivers his annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress tonight.
Everyone is speculating about will be in the speech. (Here's a link to Michelle Malkin, who has more links. Jason Smith at Generation Why has a 16-word version he'd like to hear.)
With all due respect, guessing what will be in the State of the Union address is easy, especially for those with advance copies of the speech. Let's take a look at what won't be in the speech.
Here are some topics not likely to be covered in the State of the Union address:
1. John Kerry's unsuccessful attempt to filibuster new Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. President Bush is too much of a gentleman to humiliate a political adversary at his moment of defeat.
2. Cindy Sheehan, and her possible bid to unseat Diane Feinstein as a Senator from California. Sheehan's 15 minutes of fame were over a long time ago.
3. Mistakes by Louisiana officials Mayor Ray Nagin, Gov. Kathleen Blanco, and Sen. Mary Landrieu in the response to Hurricane Katrina. If Bush mentions them at all, Bush will be polite and even complimentary, not because they deserve it but because Bush is a gentleman.
4. Oscar nominations for films like Brokeback Mountain and Speilberg's Munich. Why go there?
5. Michael Jackson. Ditto.
6. Green, glowing genetically engineered pigs. (They had to cut something.)
7. Al Gore, and his recent arrest for pointing out America's police state.
8. This blog and how much we love it. (He won't be mentioning Daily Kos either.)
9. Professor Ward Churchill and radicalism among college professors generally.
10. The Democratic response to the State of the Union speech, which is already written. (We don't have the advance text, but it will probably be similar to this one.)
Aren't points 6 and 7 redundant?
