Ariel Sharon is barely clinging to life after a massive stroke and bleeding in his brain, according to the latest updates. Reports are generally that his chances of fully recovering to normal health are not high.
Sharon had surgery to halt the bleeding, and when an MRI showed that there was further bleeding, he was returned to surgery for another operation. An update on Sharon's emergency surgery is at Haaretz.com.
Palestinians and Arab Muslims everywhere have set aside their differences and expressed sympathy for Ariel Sharon's family and loved ones.
Oops -- sorry -- that's the normal civilized response.
Palestinians, always fonts of human mercy, are viciously attacking Sharon even as he struggles for his life:
"We say it frankly that God is great and is able to exact revenge on this butcher. ... We thank God for this gift he presented to us on this new year," Ahmed Jibril, leader of the Syrian-backed faction Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, a small radical group, told the Associated Press."
And the Associated Press decided that this was a quote worth publishing, not the ravings of a madman.
Notice that "God" is mentioned twice in the above quote (actually I'm sure it's Allah in the original tongue). Apparently if terrorists invoke Allah while wishing death on someone, or beheading them for that matter, it magically transforms the most shocking cruelty into something we can all accept.
But wait! -- there's more!
Overnight, Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad showed again what kind of a man he is by announcing that he hopes Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is dead and wishes the same for the rest of the Jewish state's leaders.
"Today you will all have heard, and I hope that this is final, that the criminal of Sabra and Chatila has rejoined his ancestors," Mr Ahmadinejad said referring to Sharon's alleged role in the massacre of Palestinians by Lebanese militiamen in Beirut refugee camps in 1982.
"God willing, the others will join him soon," he added.
Perhaps this eagerness to see Israel's entire leadership dead sheds further light on why Iran is rapidly building its nuclear weapons program over the objections of the international community and announcing that Israel should be "wiped of the map."
Palestinians, Iranians and their apologists will not admit it and may not even realize it, but it is not really Ariel Sharon they hate. It is Israel they hate.
When Ariel Sharon is no longer Prime Minister, whenever that happens, Sharon's successor will also be described by Palestinians and Arab muslims generally as a "butcher," "killer," "war criminal" or worse.
Sharon's "offense" is that he, along with other leaders of Israel, has fought to save innocent Israelis from death and destruction at the hands of Muslim terrorists.
And if you live in the civilized world, then Israel's fate will be, sooner or later, the same as your fate. Think of Israel as the terrorists' "practice" run. Of course, you never know where the next "practice" will break out. Even Muslim countries (Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia), countries that bend over backwards to appease (France, Spain) and pacifist countries (Netherlands) are not exempt from deadly terrorist attacks -- and why should they be? They are perfect for target practice.
Don't worry -- they'll be sure to mention "Allah" often as keep busy wiping out one target after another, eventually including you and your children.
Now, speaking just to the civilized world for the moment: Ariel Sharon may seem larger than life to much of the world, but he is as human as the rest of us, and he and his loved ones could surely use some prayers right now.
