I believe Mr. Alzipar's mental condition was a mitigating factor. The L.A. Times reported he was returning from visiting his recently-widowed mother in Central America. Maybe he ran out of medication there. We don't know. We do know his bag was a carry-on, so the "explosive" had to make it past security checkpoints. It's hard to see how killing this man, rather than disabling him, was the better choice. Yes, he made a fatal mistake when he threatened passengers on a post-9-11 flight, but it's too bad cooler heads didn't prevail.
