According to a report today, a European Union summit plans to "address" recent remarks by Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the Holocaust is a "myth." Germany says the comments will also "weigh" on talks over Iran's nuclear program. Germany's foreign minister said that "the patience of the international community is not endless."
Did you hear that? The remarks will be "addressed" at the "summit"!
That's reassuring!
Because I was a little worried when Iran said that no amount of diplomacy will stop it from enriching uranium. That and the fact that Iran is only months away from having nuclear bombs. And the fact that Iran that has chanted "Death to America" in its legislature during the session in which it decided to resume uranium enrichment. Oh, and the fact that Iran's president has said that Israel is a "disgraceful blot" that should be "wiped off the map."
But the report todays says that, "Germany, along with France and Britain, has been leading diplomatic efforts to allay fears over Iran's nuclear intentions. "
Hmmm. Notice the wording: Germany, along with France and Britain, has been leading diplomatic efforts to . . . "allay fears over Iran's nuclear intentions."
Not necessarily to stop the nuclear plans. But definitely to make us all feel better about it.
James Lileks pretty much describes the international community's response thus far to Iran's nuclear intentions in his retrospective on the year 2005:
"Iran announces it will no longer allow inspectors into the Khomeini Memorial Peaceful Nuclear Research Facility for Hastening the Destruction of Israel. European diplomats threaten to take the matter to the U.N. Subcommittee of the Task Force for Occasionally Threatening to Issue a Strongly-Worded Report. But the group’s next meeting isn’t until 2007, and it must first take up the horror of Israel’s security fence. Iran promises to allow inspections in exchange for 500 million Euros, payable in coins of enriched uranium. The E.U. agrees, with the condition that the interest rate on the loan will be adjusted upward if Iran makes nuclear bombs. If they actually detonate a bomb there would be an immediate balloon payment, make no mistake about it."
I'll be eagerly awaiting the outcome of this EU summit.
I am sure that by the end, all of our fears will be "allayed."
