Lebanon Shows Glimmers of Hope

By DemocracyRules

If you have been ignoring Lebanon, I don't blame you.  Lebanon is always rife with sectarian hate, and sometimes they kill each other in large numbers, sometimes in small numbers.  All previous violence mainly consisted of people killing other people they didn't like -- a zero sum game.   Isn't this just the same-old same-old?

Well no, this one has a new twist.  On March 14, 2005 Lebanon became a new democracy (The Cedar Revolution).  The majority party, very pro-democracy, is called "March 14".  So far in the conflict, Hizbullah, backed by Iran and Syria, is causing all the trouble, trying to overthrow March 14 and the democratic government.  Essentially Iran and Syria are trying to regain control of Lebanon.

The pro-democracy political groups have yet to clearly see this conflict as a knock-down, drag-out fight for democracy.  The enemies of democracy are just plain old garden-variety terrorists dressed up in an ideology that is only slightly different  from that of Al Qaida.   As the conflict continues I think the Lebanese will begin to understand this better.

Given that the core of the conflict is about democracy, the stakes are higher, and the outcome could be much more meaningful than previous civil wars.

Hizbullah -- Murder Inc.

By DemocracyRules

h/t Ya Libnan

Hizterrorist_2a Well as of Saturday afternoon May 10, Eastern time, the truce is mainly holding in Lebanon.  The worst problem for Lebanon is understanding democracy.  Since 2005 they have had a wobbly democracy, with Hiz constantly trying to demolish it.  Nasrallah, the Hiz leader clearly has no idea what democracy is, but he understands hate, murder, and tyranny really well. Iran and Syria sponsor him.

The pro-Democracy coalition, which now is about 75% of the population, is also quite confused.  They understand free elections, but the rest is a blur.  For them the aim of democratic politics is unremitting disagreement and a refusal to compromise.  Of course in true democracies disagreement is vital, but the ultimate goal is consensus so one can move forward.

Murdersatprodemocratfuneral1 This Hiz terrorist is a "dissident", who is part of the "political process".  The other pictures show a Hiz-allied group murder of two people at a pro-democracy funeral.  Click on the pictures for more detail.  Animals.

Murdersatprodemocratfuneral3_2 Soon the murderers who did this will be expected to return to civilian life and will go unpunished.  Lebanon does not extirpate Hiz, this political cancer, these "bandits in the bedroom" because the pro-democracy factions will not unite against a common enemy.

Sadly most Lebanese refuse peace with Israel, and some express hatred for the U.S., but many are now hoping for an American rescue.  Thankfully for now the Lebanese army remains loyal to the government.

Hizbullah Promises to Leave Beirut

By DemocracyRules

18:01 [Lebanon Time] Hezbollah led-Opposition : "We have decided to end the armed presence and will surrender the capital to the army , but will maintain the civil disobedience ( sit-in ) until we achieve our demands"

They promised this very recently, but it's not clear if they will do it.  The Lebanese army may be leaning too much in favor of Hiz.  We'll see.

Signs of Progress in Lebanon

By DemocracyRules

Nasrallahyap_2 I KNOW IT LOOKS like everyone is killing everyone else, but that’s just silly MSM reportage.  This conflict got started when Hizbullah (Hiz) built their own fiber-optic telephone network, which could transmit signals without being detected by Israel or anyone else.  With this network, they could also attack the Lebanese government.  The Leb Government drew the line when Hiz started hooking the network up to a similar one that Syria has.  They forbade Hiz to do this and insisted that Hiz remove their network.  Hiz was ready for them, and immediately started to incite a civil war.  That’s where we’re at now.  (In-country minute-by-minute updates Here, and Here.)

THERE ARE MANY good sides to this story. This is definitely not a repeat of the Lebanese civil war. The main problem for Lebanon in the civil war was deciding who was the enemy. No one could agree, so people just killed each other. That went nowhere. This time there are really only two sides, and both sides understand who they are fighting. The two sides are forming up well, and Hiz is clearly in the minority.  Hiz is an Islamic fundamentalist, pro-Iran, pro-Syria, Shia terrorists group..  The other side is everyone else, including Sunni Muslims, most Christians, and Druze (a kind of religion of its own).

Until now, Hiz has had some Christian support.  The Christians have been wobbly, trying to play Sunni against Shia, but the Sunni are very pro-peace, stability and democracy.  Thus, the Christians will soon align AGAINST Hiz. The Christians want democracy, and Hiz clearly does not. This will create a united front against Hiz.

I hope Lebanese try to stay home as much as possible.  It’s OK for them to clean their weapons, make sure they work, buy more ammunition, and make sure everyone in the house knows how to shoot the weapons. But they need to be encouraged to use them only to protect their house. They have a right to protect their lives and property.

Some armed anti-Hiz groups are running into the street to confront Hiz.  This is a shame, because Hiz has been planning this for years, and they want to incite a chaotic civil war.   On the streets, people can get killed by the Lebanese army, who are just trying to do their jobs. I hope these hot-heads join the Lebanese army.

I'm a Canadian, and we have been doing peace-keeping since 1954, when it was invented. The best peace-keeping tactic for the Lebanese army is to confront any armed gunmen with overwhelming force. If some Hiz have set up a barricade with five gunmen, show up there with six armored personnel carriers, and at least six 0.50 caliber (1.25 mm) machine guns. Keep the troops inside. Point all the machine guns at the Hiz militia, and firmly but respectfully ask them to put down their weapons and leave.

Confronted with massive firepower, they will leave. Hiz may be crazy, but they're not stupid. A 0.50 caliber  machine gun shoots bullets the size of a small banana. Only a fool would try AK 47's against such massive firepower.

They will drop their weapons and leave. Then the Army removes the barricade. If each confrontation is kept 'asymmetrical' like this, most of Hiz can be disarmed peacefully.

The UNIFIL Troops need to become much more aggressive in the South, by actively disarming Hiz. Again, asymmetrical confrontations work best. This would create two fighting fronts for Hiz, which would weaken them a lot. Once UNIFIL has disarmed the local Hiz, they need to cross the Litani, and start pulling up that telephone network.

Assadmonster2 Meanwhile, Canada, the U.S., France, the Saudis, and Egypt need to bomb Assad's house. The ‘giraffe’ has got to go, and soon. Another obvious Syrian target is the Syrian Intelligence headquarters. It could be destroyed with just a few GPS bombs. Syria also has a few other nuclear sites which would be good to bomb right now. The world would probably not even notice.

Once Hiz is disarmed, and the Lebanese army and UNIFIL begin close cooperation, and Assad is gone, the conflict will stop. Then the Lebanese government can close the Iranian embassy and evict all Iranian 'diplomats'.

After all that, the two armies can cooperate to disarm Hiz, house-by-house if necessary.

Hizbullah Tries For Civil War in Lebanon

By DemocracyRules

h/t Naharnet.com

Hizmay7_08 The effort is calculated and well-coordinated.  This is not the first time Hiz has tried to incite civil war.  Hiz is an Islamist terrorist group funded by Iran and sponsored by Syria.  They are Shia Muslims.  About 65% of Lebanese hate Hiz.  Hiz started a war against Israel and got decimated, as well as getting a bunch of Lebanon bombed (just where Hiz were hiding).  Hiz has no money to rebuild their areas, and the rest of Lebanon is not predisposed to help them.  Hiz insists on keeping their arms in spite of UN resolutions demanding that they disarm.

The Israeli military has castigated itself for not killing enough Hiz fast enough before a truce was declared.  I thought Israel did pretty well, given that it was a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing.

Either Assad of Syria or Iran are behind this new confrontation.  Lebanon has been a wobbly democracy since 2005, and they now have a pretty good, loyal army of about 50,000.  The biggest group who opposes Hiz are Lebanese Sunni's(!?)

If the Hiz militia goes beyond the burning tires and highway barricades this time, the Lebanese army will dis-arm them if necessary.  I hope they also dis-leg them.

Rice Giving Up On Carrots

By Democracy Rules

Condi was en route to a meeting in Switzerland today and had a press briefing aboard her aircraft.  The Swiss meeting is about Iran, and with the press, she discussed incentives for Iran to give up nuclear development.

"The Iranians haven't shown any interest -- I don't care what's been put before them -- in doing what they need to do, which is to suspend enrichment and reprocessing... Nothing has been able so far to change the fundamental problem ... It's Iran, that's the problem...We've got to intensify our efforts on the U.N. Security Council resolutions themselves. I believe there is plenty in the .... resolutions that if fully implemented, fully executed, fully used, will increase the pressure on Iran."

Uh, Condi, that is so yesterday.  If you keep doing something and doing it, and doing it, and doing it, and it doesn't work, you have to try something else.  The UN is kind of hoping that Iran will nuke the U.S.  It would bring the U.S. down closer to their size.

Dam108_a Turn that aircraft around and go home.  Go directly to meet with Gates and the Pentagon to figure out the best way to bomb Syria.  I know, the political timing is bad, but since when is war convenient?  Put 24 GPS-guided small-diameter bombs into Assad's bedroom.  Hit exactly the same spot 24 times in a row. Space them one minute apart. In 24 minutes, 24 bombs.

It doesn't matter whether he is home or not.  One hour after the bombing stops, phone him and and invite him to 'visit' Tunisia, and you will ensure safe transit to his destination.  Give him 15 minutes to decide.  If he refuses, do nothing.  Sit back and think, something will come to you.

If he retaliates against Israel, they will nuke him, and that's OK.  He certainly has it coming.  But he knows that, so he won't retaliate against Israel.  He's not religious, and he's a coward.  Look at his fear-ridden eyes, his emotions are clearly present on his face.

He will probably activate Hezbullah.  That would be a great opportunity for the US and Israel, because you could bomb the living daylights out of Hizbullah.  Invite France to help, it'll be fun.

I know it's aggressive and fraught with risk.  But the era of the Secretary of State is over in this administration.  The diplomacy time window is closing.  Furthermore, it's politically safer than you think.  The Dems are in disastrous disarray, and before they could muster the wherewithal to speak up, Assad would be history, and everyone will just be relieved.

Israel just said today that they cannot wait on Iran, and they never joke about these things.  With nukes only, Israel will make a heck of a mess in Syria and Iran.  Only the U.S. Air Force can do this with minimum loss of life.  You know the Air Force would love to get their hands dirty anyway.  Of course, they already have several plans ready. The Army and Marines are getting all the glory right now.

Forget the future, and forget about your 'legacy'.  The Secretary of State never has much legacy anyway.  Who was Truman's' Sec'y of State?  No one remembers these people except their mothers.  On the other hand, Bush's legacy will be worth squat if y'all don't jump on those buggers right now.

Bolten said, "I don't do carrots," and right now he is dead right.  Take out Assad ASAP, and then give Iran a few days to think about it.

You just said yourself today that carrots are not working.  Ergo, you must do sticks.

Two Years Ago Today on GINA COBB: Iran Says Will Attack Israel

Originally published on May 2, 2006:  Iran Says Will Attack Israel

From Reuters:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran threatened on Tuesday to attack Israel in response to any "evil" act by the United States and said it had enriched uranium to a level close to the maximum compatible with civilian use in power stations.

Of course, since Iran claims everything the United States does is "evil," the proper way to report this story is that Iran has now announced its intention to attack Israel.

And what, pray tell, will Iran attack Israel with?  Its "peaceful" nuclear power stations?

Right.

The wolf is still trotting around under a sheepskin, buying time as it plots its move, but it can't resist baring its teeth now and then.

Syrian Reactor Capable of 1or 2 Bombs/ Yr

By DemocracyRules

Last week the CIA said the Syrian facility was a plutonium reactor built with North Korean cooperation and intended to fuel a nuclear weapons program.

On Monday April 24, CIA Director Michael Hayden said, "In the course of a year after they got full up, they would have produced enough plutonium for one or two weapons... [The reactor was a]  similar size and technology [to North Korea's Yongbyon reactor]... We would estimate that the production rate there would be about the same as Yongbyon, which is about enough plutonium for one or two weapons per year."

The UN International Atomic Energy Agency complained about the US waiting to share its findings. John Bolten was amused when he heard the IAEA complaint.  I won't print his comment.

Hayden said it was a "team effort... we did not have complete control of the totality of the information... one would never share the intelligence without consultation with that nation, as a general principle."

Syria denies any responsibility. Plutonium could be used to make children’s toys.  No mention was made of at least two other Syrian sites that closely resemble the one that was bombed

If Syrian officials claim the sky is blue, it's good to go outside and check.

The Iraqi WMD Issue, Back From the Grave

By DemocracyRules

From White House Press briefing with Dana Perino, April 24,2008:

Bomb Question:    "One more general question, though.  The administration got it wrong on Iraq and weapons of mass destruction.  Why should this new information, whatever it is, be believed?"

The Iraqi WMD issue is important now because the MSM use the 'no WMD' myth to dismiss the Syrian plutonium reactor revelation.

The 'no WMD' issue is like a zombie that won't die no matter how many times you kill it.  The experts look at it, examine it, discuss it, conclude that Saddam had WMD, and then they put it to rest.

Zombie_2 The next thing you know the MSM has dug the 'no WMD' myth up again, pumped it full of juice, and sent it out again to maraud through the publics' consciousness.  The MSM has to believe there were no WMD.  If they acknowledged that Saddam had them, then almost all their criticisms of Bush since 9/11 would be proved false.  The MSM has to believe there were no WMD, so they do.

Well then let us revive the zombie-hunters, they are very well armed.

Hillary Clinton summed things up very well on October 10, 2002, verbatim from the Senate record: "In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security."

Hillary was dead right on every point.  As Gina has shown, Saddam did give aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda.

Saddam's people designed, planned and built almost every component of a complete and multifaceted WMD program.  FIVE HUNDRED TONS of uranium oxide is not chump change.  He also had more than a ton of highly enriched uranium. He designed and built delivery devices.  He is on record as discussing these programs, including plans to move some of the programs abroad. Then he moved WMD to Syria.  He cooperated with Libya in developing some of these weapons.  He collaborated with Qaddafi in attempting to acquire African lands that were within missile range of the USA. Qaddafi renounced WMD's because without Saddam he could not afford to continue.  Saddam also discussed programs which were unknown to the weapons inspectors.  Millions of Iraqi documents have yet to be translated and analyzed.  Experts are still unraveling Nazi WMD programs.

I hope you will find time to look at my previous posting on this, I worked like a dog to assemble the information.  I thought it was important.

Since my posting, new support has appeared.  For example, Scott Ritter was a former Iraqi weapons inspector who quit in 1998, expressing deep concern about Saddam's WMD.  Then after 9/11, he reversed his position, claiming to know that Saddam had no WMD.  He appeared on all MSM channels, all the time, denouncing Bush and any planned attack on Saddam.  It's now known that about the time he changed his mind, he received $400,000 from an associate of Saddam.  He did not declare this obvious conflict of interest until others learned of it.

The MSM must believe there were no WMD, so they do.

Iran Plays Footsie Again With US Ships
This time the American boat fired on the speedboats.  The sailors probably deliberately missed the attacking speedboats.  If a well-equipped US Navy vessel actually decided to stop a speedboat run, they would activate their Phalanx system.  Phalanx is a robot system with built-in targeting radar and an automatic rapid-fire high-accuracy Gatling gun.  If Phalanx were activated, the speedboat would be gone within seconds.  Iran knows this.

Phalanx2_2 Iran may be deliberately cruisin' for a bruisin'.  After a few more runs like this, they can load a boat with women and children and run it straight towards a US Navy Vessel.  Then they can talk about a "failure to communicate", and call it a "deliberate attack on civilians" to help distract from the current Syrian crisis.

They can also shout "Gulf of Tonkin", which the MSM would eat up.  Some historians claim that an attack on a US Warship by the North Vietnamese in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964 was somehow faked.  They claim Lyndon Johnson did this to create an incident to justify further escalation of the Vietnam War.

Shouting "Gulf of Tonkin" might actually force the US Navy to use extreme caution vis a vis Iranian vessels.

I don't think it would  take much at this point to trigger a war with Iran.

The Syria-North Korea Plutonium Connection

By DemocracyRules

The CIA is about to publicly disclose what they know about the Syrian site that Israel bombed last September.

Ahmadinejad_2

This disclosure is expected to identify this site as a plutonium reactor which Syria was building with the help of North Korea.

This upcoming meeting in the US is causing massive maneuvering in the Middle East.  Syria has undertaken a series of actions which tend to distract from this bombshell meeting.  If in fact Syria and North Korea were preparing to make plutonium, that would have huge implications.   Assad of Syria and Mr. Il of North Korea have been very bad boys.

Plutonium is only used to make nuclear bombs, not electricity.  If you get caught with it, it's very clear what your intentions are.  A piece of plutonium the size of a softball is all you need for a bomb.

What is Plutonium?
Plutonium is similar to uranium, in that it is a very heavy element, heavier than lead.  Each plutonium atom is loaded with neutrons, which are neutral particles in the core of the atom.  The core is like a bunch of billiard balls clumped together.  They tend to clump, or stick together because of the 'strong force'.  Humans don't normally see or experience the strong force, because it's inside atoms.  With other basic forces like electricity and  magnetism, we can actually see or feel their effects.

Protons are also clinging to the atom's core, and they are positively charged.  Electrons are much smaller than protons and neutrons, and they are negatively charged.  The electrons circle the core of the atom because they are 'in orbit' around the protons.  The positive-negative attraction that maintains the 'orbit' is called the 'weak force'.

Neutrons can get knocked out of the core of plutonium atoms by various loose particles that are always zooming around in the spaces between atoms.  If a particle hits the core of the plutonium atom, then the neutrons can just scatter, basically destroying that one atom.  The scattering neutrons can hit other atoms nearby, and knock them apart.  This is the chain reaction that causes a nuclear explosion. It's not like other explosions, nothing catches fire.  It's not a chemical reaction, the atoms themselves are breaking apart.

Plutonium is so heavy and dense that each atom makes a big target, so the material is prone to 'go critical' and break apart.  If the piece of plutonium is too big, there will be too many of the internal atom disintegrations happening too close to each other and it will blow up right then and there.  The piece of plutonium for a bomb has to be just a bit too small to 'go critical' or blow up by itself.

Even just sitting there on a workbench, a piece of plutonium will be highly radioactive, because neutrons are constantly scattering around inside, and when the atoms break they send neutrons, protons and electrons zooming out.   That's what radioactivity is, and it can damage human cells by breaking molecules apart.

How Hard Is it to Make it Into a Bomb?
Plutonium bombs were first designed and built in the Manhattan project.  I think Canada made the plutonium.  Some aspects of the Manhattan project are still secret.

The bomb is made by taking a highly refined piece of plutonium that's just a bit too small to go critical.  Then engineers surround it with a complete 'jacket' of explosives.   The explosive jacket is designed to blow inwards.  When it's triggered, the explosives momentarily squeeze the plutonium inside.  The plutonium atoms are suddenly squeezed closer together, and each one becomes a closer target for the constantly scattering neutrons.  The collision rate goes way up, and the whole thing goes critical.  Most of the plutonium atoms break apart in an instant, and energy from the strong force inside all these atoms is released.

Even a lightning bolt is just the 'weak force' in action, as electrons dislodge from their 'home atoms' and pass through the air.  The strong force is much stronger than that.  In an instant, most of the plutonium disappears as the atoms disintegrate, and the radioactive neurons, protons, and electrons stream out at the speed of light.  Boom!

North Korea's Bomb
North Korea seems to have already built a plutonium bomb, but it didn't work.  From what I can glean, the explosive jacket misfired, and the plutonium wasn't squeezed properly.  The explosives blew the whole thing apart before the plutonium went critical.  Bits of radioactive plutonium went into the atmosphere, and it was labeled a 'fizzle yield'.

So if North Korea has no working plutonium bomb, what's the problem?  The problem is that Syria and North Korea are trying very hard to make it work.  The renegade Pakistani nuclear physicist (Khan) sold many nuclear secrets.  He helped North Korea, Iraq, Libya, and Iran a lot.  He supplied complete bomb designs that he got from China.  We know he made those bomb designs work, because Pakistan has nuclear weapons.

The Situation is Dangerous
The situation is dangerous because: (1) This proves North Korea is not disarming, instead they moved to Syria to try the plutonium bomb design again.  (2) We now know that Syria and North Korea are in cahoots.  (3)  We already knew Iran and Syria are in cahoots, so now we have three nuclear co-conspirators.  Iran has already been caught with nuclear bomb designs. (4) Iran is also intimately connected to Hizbulla in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine.  They also collaborate with and Al Qaida from time to time.  (5) If Iran or Syria gets their hands on a plutonium bomb, they could give it to a terrorist group to detonate in Israel.  One simple plan is to load the bomb on a ship or boat and sail it into Tel Aviv harbor.  A nuclear explosion there would kill roughly 100,000 Israelis. (6) This ship-based strategy could also be done in any harbor in the world. (7) Iran or Syria could disavow all knowledge and responsibility ("We don't know where they got that bomb").  This would make retaliation almost impossible.

Bush was right about the 'axis of evil' thing.

Two Years Ago Today on GINA COBB: Israel and Palestinians Equally Wrong? Not Unless Premeditated Murder Is the Same as Negligence

Originally published on April 21, 2006:  Israel and Palestinians Equally Wrong? Not Unless Premeditated Murder Is the Same as Negligence

Wounded_tel_aviv_41706_2 Another homicide bombing in Israel this week.  It happened at a Tel Aviv restaurant.  At least eight are dead; at last 60 are wounded.  The victims included men, women and children.  All were civilian noncombatants.  They were not caught in the line of fire in a battle between militants.  They were peacefully going about their business when they were deliberately killed and maimed.  Children saw their mother killed.

The bomber and the persons who planned the killings and built the bomb knew they would kill innocent men, women and children who were minding their own business.  They are happy about the resulting deaths, injuries, tears, and funerals.  They passed out pastries to celebrate.  They announced that 70 more such attacks are coming.

And the world shrugs its shoulders.

It's not our concern, right?

Last time I checked, we don't live in Israel.  Not most of us, anyway.

And last time I checked, most of us aren't even Jewish.

So it's their problem.  Not ours.

Besides, there's violence on both sides.  It's a cycle of violence.

But maybe we should review what's really going on, just to be sure.

Here's what we know about the violence caused by the Palestinians:

1.  The Palestinians strap bombs filled with shrapnel to themselves.  The bombers intend to be killed.  The shrapnel is soaked in rat poison to ensure hemorrhaging in the victims.  The Palestinian attacks often also include further bombs targeting rescue workers who come to aid the victims.

In attacks planned in advance, the Palestinians routinely and deliberately take these bombs into the middle of crowds of people who are civilian noncombatants minding their own business -- eating at a restaurant, attending a celebration, or riding a bus.  The targets selected are men, women and children.

They are not killed because they happen to be too close to another target.  They are the target.

Percentage of persons intended to be killed:  100% (the bomber and everyone at the scene, including rescue workers)

Target:  100% civilian noncombatants

Planning and premeditation of deaths of civilian targets:  100%

2.  The perpetrators of these attacks are celebrated and glorified by the Palestinians, and the Palestinians announce that more such attacks will be coming.

Let's compare this to what Israel does:

1.   The Israelis do not routinely and deliberately plan in advance to kill not only their own soldiers, but also crowds of innocent noncombatant civilians who are eating at a restaurants, riding buses, etc.  Although critics of Israel point to examples of civilian Palestinian deaths, those examples almost always involve civilians accidentally or unavoidably caught in the line of fire (collateral damage of war) or civilians who were deliberately involving themselves in the conflict by throwing rocks, staying in the way, etc.

2.  Some of the accidental Palestinian deaths are the direct result of the Palestinians' own prior attacks on innocent civilians.  For example, the Palestinians use an ambulance to sneak a homicide bomb into a crowd of innocent people, and then complain when the next ambulance is not waved through a checkpoint as usual and the patient in the ambulance suffers as a result.  These same Palestinians use every act of self-defense on Israel's part -- even something as harmless as building a wall to keep out homicide bombers -- as an excuse for more attacks on Israel.

But what about civilian Palestinians killed by Israelis, like a girl killed this week in an Israeli strike?  Israel has indeed caused some civilian deaths by accident or perhaps even by negligence or gross negligence, but it does not routinely plan to kill noncombatant civilian Palestinians as its goal.  Israel does not deliberately target noncombatant men, women, or children for death.  The Palestinians do.

3. On the rare occasions when an isolated Israeli recklessly or deliberately kills innocent, noncombatant civilian Palestinians (such attacks are very few and far between), those who carry out such acts are not celebrated and glorified by most Israelis, and most Israelis do not brag that more such attacks on noncombatant civilians will be forthcoming.  This is the exact opposite of what occurs when a Palestinian does the same thing or worse.

The distinction is not difficult to make, if you really think about it.

Even a dog understands the difference between being tripped over and being deliberately kicked.

Everyone on earth understands the difference between accidentally hitting a child with a car and deliberately planning to run over a child with a car and carrying out that very plan.  One is a horrible accident or at most negligence or even gross negligence; the other is first-degree, premeditated murder.

No sane civilized society treats the driver who accidentally kills a child the same as it treats a serial murderer.

No reasonable person thinks that if the police accidentally take a civilian life while chasing a suspect, it is fair game for the police to be slaughtered in response -- or, worse yet, that it's fair game for the family of the victim to stand in the crowded town square and spray bullets in every direction to "get even." Yet that is exactly what Palestinians argue every day to justify their campaign of slaughtering innocent civilians.

When Israel starts detonating bombs in crowds of Palestinians who are just eating at restaurants -- not accidentally while pursing a military target, but routinely, as their entire goal -- then critics of Israel can legitimately say that there is moral equivalency between the Palestinians and Israel. Until then, there is no comparison.

Why does it matter?

It matters, first of all, from the standpoint of simple human justice and mercy.  We don't treat accidental or negligent killing and premeditated murder the same way because it would be wrong to do so.

Second, until you are clear about the difference between right and wrong, you can't figure out how to solve any problem.

If the troubles in the Middle East seem to be endless, perhaps part of the reason for that is the endless excuses being made for those who are willing to commit acts that are genuinely evil.

One of those excuses is poverty.  Nonsense.  In no courtroom on earth is being poor a defense to a charge of premeditated murder.  In fact, being willing to support premeditated murder is a good way to ensure that your society stays lawless and poor.

Saying that there is a "cycle of violence" in the Middle East is like saying that there is a "cycle of violence" between criminal gangs and police.  The solution is not for the police to turn over the city to the gangs and go home.  That would only ensure that the violence continues.

Make sure you're clear in your own mind about what moral standards you believe in.  Do you believe that involuntary manslaughter is the same as premeditated murder?

If you accidentally kill a person while driving your car -- as a few unlucky people have -- are you on the same moral plane as the Unibomber, the BTK killer, or any other serial killer?

Even if your driving was not as careful as it should have been, you are not even remotely in the same ballpark as a serial killer.  You did not intend to take someone's life.  You are filled with regret; the serial killer is filled with glee.  And while you, out of your sincere regret, will go to great lengths in the future to make sure that it never happens again, out of the serial killer's glee will grow the plans for his next killing.

Israelis openly lament the deaths of any innocent Palestinian civilians, and takes pains to avoid such innocent deaths whenever humanly possible.  Palestinians take open glee in the death of any innocent Israeli civilian.

It's not asking too much to expect all sane, decent human beings on earth to be willing to take sides against routine, premeditated mass murder of noncombatant civilians.

Please have the moral clarity, the courage, and the common decency to take sides.

If you can't be bothered to challenge the pure evil of premeditated serial mass murder before it reaches out and harms you and your loved ones personally, then what good are you to the world?

Let your decency show.  Be willing, once in a while, to give credit to people who are struggling albeit imperfectly to do the right thing and protect their own safety without killing innocent people.  Be willing once in a while to acknowledge basic decency when you see it.

Go out on a limb once in a while and have the courage to condemn what is clearly wrong.  Use the word "evil" once in a blue moon.  Not every day.  Not for little things, like your political opponents.  Once in a while, use the world "evil" when it really fits.

"Evil" is the only word to describe what the Palestinians routinely do, and then gloat over.  If deliberate, premeditated murder of innocent men, women and children who were minding their own business and not anywhere near any line of fire is not pure evil, then what is?

If terrorism isn't evil, then you might as well throw the word away and hope that you're never on the receving end of what you chose not to condemn.
