Pickpockets are smooth. A little distraction here, a quick hand there, and -- whoops! -- your money is gone.
Which brings me to this by Nolan Finley: Obama Gets Busy Shifting the Wealth
Don't be surprised if someday soon you're asked to punch in your Social Security number when you swipe your credit card at the gasoline pump. Why? So your income tax files can be checked to determine how much you'll pay per-gallon -- the more you make, the higher the price.
It's not as absurd a scenario as it sounds. The aggressiveness with which President Barack Obama is pursuing his wealth transfer agenda makes it entirely possible that before he's through, the price of everything you buy will be set by the size of your paycheck.
Obama has made wealth transfer a major component of nearly every measure he's proposed. . . . .
And Obama didn't have to answer hard questions about his affection for Marxist economic theory.
He is answering them now. Or at least his policies are. The ideology of "from each ... to each" is embedded in everything he puts on the table.
Carbon cap-and-trade is a good example. The administration knows that the severe carbon dioxide emission limits it desires will drive up costs for consumers. And while the White House is intentionally dishonest in estimating the impact, independent analysis suggests it could be $3,000 or more annually per household.
Higher utility, gasoline and food prices will hit low-income families particularly hard. So Obama would take the profit from the carbon credits to fund energy rebates for the poor and working class. Bottom line: Everyone else will have to give up more of their earnings to fund this new welfare program.
A similar scheme is attached to his health care proposal. Obama was up-front during the campaign about his intention to bleed higher-income earners to pay for universal health care. Now, he's also talking about taxing middle-class health care benefits.
Last week, the White House unveiled a new federal student loan policy that forgives college graduates from repaying their obligations if their incomes are below a certain level. Ultimately, that will require everyone else to pay more to make up the difference.
This goes beyond noblesse oblige. It's coerced charity. And it reflects Obama's strategy of using the tax code to smooth out the differences between rich, middle class and poor.
That approach won't result in better lifestyles for everyone. Rather, most people will have less when the government takes everybody's money, throws it into a pot and spoons it back out on its own whims.
Yes, pickpockets are smooth. By the time you realize your wallet is missing, it's already too late.
