CNN DOESN'T LIKE IT. They call it "Playing the Socialist Card." "Joe the Plumber" specifically objected to wealth redistribution.
Socialism. noun. Date:1837. (1): any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods. -- Webster's
According to this definition, wealth redistribution is inherent in the definition of Socialism. A collective or government owns the sources of wealth, and it distributes that wealth to the people. Therefore ONLY A SOCIALIST government can engage in wealth redistribution.
Neither Liberalism nor Conservatism "advocates collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods." Both Liberals and Conservatives advocate free-market economies, in which the marketplace allocates wealth.
Therefore, it is not an epithet or a "political playing card" to state that wealth redistribution is Socialist. It's just a factual statement.
