Let's Review Elementary Logic, Sir Elton John
An intemperate remark by musician Elton John is getting attention today:
There’s a real crowd at Radio City, complete with scalpers, and lines around the block for Elton John and the Clintons. …
Elton John was a bit edgier:
“I never cease to be amazed at the misogynist attitude of some of the people in this country,” he said. “I say to hell with them.”
Let's review Elton John's remark in light of basic logic, shall we?
Rule of elementary logic #1: Correlation is not causation.
Even you think, Sir Elton John, that some people in America are misogynist, and even if you see Hillary Clinton's campaign going down the tubes, the two are not necessarily linked.
After all, you weren't exactly a fan of Margaret Thatcher, were you? If attacking a woman or refusing to support her leadership is misogynistic, then writing songs wishing for their death should put you near the front of the line of misogynists, shouldn't it?
There are many reasons that Americans are fed up with Hillary Clinton, and they have nothing to do with her gender and everything to do with her character.
That's why, as Ed Morrissey remarked, "Elton John may need to crank up another version of Candle in the Wind for Hillary Clinton’s political career."
Rule of elementary logic #2: Don't take advice from experts outside their area of expertise.
It's never a good idea to take advice from an expert or celebrity outside their area of expertise.
I might take Elton John's advice about how to compose hit songs, but his authority on U.S. presidential politics is nil.
One More Thing . . .
Finally, as an aside, Elton John's remark, "To hell with them," is not worthy of a decent human being.
Everyone makes remarks like this once in a while, but it isn't right.
For all his faults, I don't wish Elton John a place in hell. Quite the opposite. I hope he finds a connection to God.
Perhaps he was just throwing around words without meaning them, but If Elton John really wishes damnation for the millions or billions around the world who disagree with him politically, he needs to look closer at his own heart and soul.
Elton John has reportedly stated that he "hates religion." How is that working out for you, sir? Are you happy and content, or increasingly miserable?
Based on several intemperate remarks reported in the media in recent years (I'm thinking of an attack on Madonna and an unpleasant scene in Taiwan), a little soul-searching may be overdue, not only for the sake of others but for Elton John's own peace of mind. Elton John is 60 years old, an age at which many people have the maturity to give at least some thought to the eternal and not just the immediate. No better time than now.
