This what months and years of soft-spoken, weak-kneed U.N. "diplomacy" will buy you when you are dealing with a power-mad country like Iran: Crazy talk from Iran.
The situation has been deteriorating almost on an hourly basis this week -- from Iran's boast that it has begun enriching uranium, to its plan to crank up over 50,000 more centrifuges, to its threat of Israel's imminent annihilation, to its latest threats against America linked above.
You'll recall that I am one of those who predicted this dismal outcome of the U.N.'s efforts to solve the Iranian problem through diplomacy. I wrote here on December 10, 2005 that diplomacy had failed; no amount of diplomacy would stop Iran from enriching uranium. (No, I didn't need an advanced degree in geopolitics to call this one.)
Let's review our depiction of the civilized members of the U.N. and the European Union from my prior posts:
And here they are again, as viewed by Iran:
Cox and Forkum complete the analogy in today's cartoon (click on the cartoon to enlarge it):
I understand why the White House felt it had to go through this hollow exercise of dancing with the U.N. It was an absolute requirement in order to give the left -- both in America and around the world -- time to come to grips with the current reality.
And this week, Iran has served up one hot, piping cup of fresh-brewed reality after another.
It's apparent now to everyone who is not comatose or buried in self-defeating partisan political hatred that Iran is an even greater threat to world peace than Iraq -- and that doesn't mean Iraq was not a threat.
Let's review Iraq, since some will cling to Iraq as a life-raft-of-an-excuse for doing nothing about Iran until it's too late. Who knows whether Saddam Hussein moved WMDs to Syria or elsewhere before the U.S. invasion, or whether he had no nuclear WMDs but merely confined himself to the relatively modest amount of chemical weapons that were found. Saddam Hussein's Iraq was a state sponsor of terrorism; it recruited suicide bombers to attack American interests, funded radical Islamic terrorist training camps, tortured and killed Iraq's own people in mass numbers, stole U.N. oil-for-food funds, and paid $25,000 to the families of every Palestinian homicide bomber, thereby directly sponsoring terrorist attacks on innocent Israeli men, women and children. Iraq was a major sponsor of terrorism, and there was ample reason to make history of Saddam Hussein.
Now as to Iran, if you needed any more evidence that this threat must be addressed, you'll find plenty of it in this week's developments. Here are my prior posts on Iran. If you're not already up to speed on the threat from Iran, please skim the recent history of Iran's rapidly growing nuclear threat. Scroll down if you will, or start at the bottom and scroll up, for a little journey back in time. Then come back here.
Now are we all on the same page?
We should be. Iran is a threat that will not wait until 2008 or until someone's impeachment fantasy not only comes true but results in a whole different administration in the White House.
Ignore this threat, and it will grow. It will grow so fast that it will make your head spin. And it will pound Israel hard -- either before or after it pounds America hard.
Are we on the same page that Iran must be stopped, now, and that it will not happen by saying "pretty please"? Or will the left scream "Not another Iraq!" every five minutes as the U.S. and its allies proceed to do what has to be done?
Wake up and get on board. Check your conspiracy theories and your petty, partisan political attacks at the door.
We've got a threat to deal with. It's real, it's serious, and it won't wait. Are you with us, or against us?

'powermad', as opposed to your 'god-given' right to be mad about power i suppose. The chickens are finally coming home to roost. Read your history books and you'll get what i mean.
